Haiti
Haiti migration officials have asked the United States for a humanitarian moratorium as they receive the returnees from the U.S. In July 2021, the Haitian president, Jovenel Moïse, was assassinated, setting off a battle for power. A month later, the impoverished southern peninsula was devastated by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake, and the Caribbean nation’s shaky government was ill-equipped to handle the aftermath.
According to a United Nations report released last week, 800,000 people have been affected by the quake. A month after it struck, 650,000 still need emergency humanitarian assistance.
Many of the migrants who will be deported have little to return to. The failed state of Haiti has little means to help the returned refugees. The government says it can’t provide enough food, shelter, or even guarantee security.
Haiti is planning was planning to hold early elections in September 2021 to reinstate a legitimate head of state. In the mean time, Haiti’s interim government led by Ariel Henry didn’t organize elections yet. Elections have been postponed several times because of the pandemic, and the political instability in the country.
America backed the late president Moïse, even as his anti-democratic abuses increased. Please read this article for more background info.
Policy options:
– Negotiate a deal with the US or other nations to help the refugees
– Ask for help from Mexico or other nations to protect Haitians
– Ask for foreign help to secure and stabilize the country.
