Astrea has a population of 180 million people. The country’s economy is versatile. Astrea exports oil, minerals, and agricultural products and has a booming services sector. The GDP is 1 trillion. Astrea is one of the unequal countries in the world. The lack of public services and an excellent public school system are the main constraints for upward class mobility. Astrea also has a high level of corruption, and too many public servants, with disproportionally high salaries. The informal economy is growing in Astrea.

Since 1850 the country has been ruled by a president. The current president, Mister Folgar, is popular with a part of the population because of his scarce programs to combat poverty. He can be considered a populist.

Astrea enjoys a warm climate and is blessed with luscious landscapes. The country hosts many forests, rivers, and mountains and has picturesque beaches. The natural beauty attracts tourists all year to Astrea’s main coastal areas. The country’s interior is not very touristic because of the high crime rates. Astrea records many carjackings, kidnappings, robberies, and gang wars every year. It is one of the most dangerous places on earth.

Corona devasted the country. Astrea has one of the highest death rates in the world. Twenty percent of patients who contracted corona die. Fake news spread by the government causes a high death rate. Mister Folgar downplayed the dangers of Covid-19 since the beginning of the crisis. Folgar refused to encourage the Astreans to do social distancing and doesn’t believe in vaccines or PPE. Because of the government’s laissez-faire approach, Astrea was on the news frequently. Astrea has public health care services, but they are severely unfunded, making it impossible for poorer citizens to get health care. The private health care industry is only accessible to the happy few. Approximately 20 percent of Astreans can afford health care treatments and insurance.

On September 2nd, 2020, the country celebrated its independence day; 100 million people attended the celebrations. Afterward, the country recorded 500000 corona infections. The number has been increasing steadily since.

Due to global supply chain shortages, only 40 percent of the population has access to PPE.
